GILMORE: Spying claims "sinister" & "unacceptable"

The Tanaiste says the claims of spying at the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission are " quite sinister" and "unacceptable".

Its reported in the Sunday Times that the GSOC headquarters in Dublin has been the target of a sophisticated surveillance operation, using what's described as government level technology.

The discovery was made by a British security consultancy firm, which was hired last year to examine if the office on Abbey Street was under surveillance.

It concluded that a speaker phone, regularly used in conferences on sensitive cases, was bugged, while the Garda watchdog's wifi network had been compromised.

Senior officials from the Garda watchdog are to meet the Justice Minister Alan Shatter this afternoon to discuss the allegations.
