IRELAND'S THIRTY-SOMETHINGS are more likely to trust information they find on Google than news they hear through RTE, a new poll has revealed.
An exclusive poll commissioned by Today FM reveals that although RTE remains one of the country's most trusted news outlets, it lags behind Google in truthworthiness among people in their 30s.
79 per cent of the respondents to the poll, carried out by Behaviour & Attitudes, said they would trust Google as a source of news and information.
RTE scored highly, at 74 per cent, but still lagged five points behind Google - and also behind the "other Irish radio stations" category, which holds the trust of 77 per cent of respondents.
Newspapers remain trustworthy, but only to the same degree as online-only news websites.
Both categories are trusted by 70 per cent of respondents.
However, Irish newspapers are much more trusted by Irish audiences than British titles - with only 50 per cent of respondents saying they would be happy to trust information taken from an "English newspaper".
Although other online media like blogs, Facebook and Twitter are further down the list, Behaviour & Attitudes says there have been "significant increases" in how their levels of trustworthiness have increased in recent years.
45 per cent of respondents said they trusted blogs in general, while 43 per cent trusted Facebook and 41 per cent trusted Twitter.
Only 40 per cent of respondents said they trusted the information they received from general advertising.
