The Government is reportedly on the verge of agreeing on a ban to stop drinks companies from sponsoring sporting events.

According to the the Sunday Business Post, the lost revenue would be replaced by either a special tax on alcohol or exchequer grants.

Ministers had been locked on the missue for months - with Health Ministers James Reilly and Alex White pushing for the ban - despite the reservations of Ministers including Leo Varadkar.

It's believed an understanding was reached between both sides - with sports organisations likely to be compensated for the drop in advertising revenue.

The Sunday Business Post reports that other measures likely to be approved by the Government in September include a ban on below-cost selling of alcohol and a review of drinks advertising.
