The government is to commission an independent study on whether to abandon pylons and put new electricity lines underground.

Energy minister Pat Rabbitte is setting up an independent group which will examine the feedback from Eirgrid's public consultation.

EirGrid will also be told to investigate the potential cost and visual aspects of putting its proposed lines underground.
