Government To Vote To Delay Bill On Legalising Small Amounts Of Cannabis

Government To Vote To Delay Bill On Legalising Small Amounts Of Cannabis

Potential laws are being discussed which would legalise small amounts of cannabis.

People Before Profit's bill would allow the possession of up to 7 grams of cannabis herb without prosecution, while for cannabis resin it would be 2.5 grams.

Last week, the Citizens Assembly recommended decriminalising their use in Ireland.

Decriminalising would still make possession of the drug illegal however whoever is caught won't be prosecuted.

There are 36 recommendations from the assembly which aim to create a new Irish model to reduce the harm caused by drugs use.

The recommendations will go to an Oireachtas committee, which would then make recommendations on potential laws.

Today, the Dáil is discussing a bill which would make it lawful for people to possess small amounts of cannabis.

However, the government is to vote for an amendment which would delay it for nine months.

Speaking in the Dáil, People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy accused the government of intentionally delaying the bill's progress:
