The government's announced its shelving its flagship Universal Health Insurance policy.

Health Minister Leo Varadkar admitted the high costs of the proposed model are not acceptable.

It follows a number of reports to government warning the scheme could cost up to 2 billion euro.

The Health Minister said Universal Health Insurance would not work unless the health system underwent major reforms that would take years to implement.
