The Garda Representative Association says new figures about the numbers of officers unavailable for duty don't tell the full story.
A report in today's Irish Examiner says 880 Gardai are not available on any given day.
Government figures indicate that over half that number were out sick.
But GRA President Dermot O'Brien told the Last Word the figures represent the difficult nature of the job:
