A Fianna Fáil senator has said Greece would have been saved from its crisis if it had leaders like Brian Cowen and Brian Lenihan.

Senator Terry Leyden says that leaders like the two Irishmen would have help Greece avoid the difficult measures it now faces.

The Roscommon-based senator made his comments in the Seanad this afternoon while the day's business was being debated.

He said Greece would not be facing "troubled waters" if it had leaders of the calibre of Cowen and Lenihan.

He also claimed that the events of Greece prove that Ireland's ATMs would have run dry without the intervention of the government at the time.
