Details will be released today of an underground proposal for the Grid West electricity project.
Eirgrid will outline how the 113 kilometre route would run from Roscommon to Mayo.
A proposal has already been put forward for a pylon network as an overground option - that would cost almost a quarter of a billion euro.
Both potential schemes will be examined by an independent panel which the government set up earlier this year in response to public concern over plans for the national grid.
Eirgrid says its too early to say how much the underground option will cost.
Chief Executive Fintan Slye says today's announcement is about taking the concerns of locals on board.
