The Department of Justice received a thousand requests a month for access to phones or internet data between 2008 and 2012.

Most came from the Gardai, with GSOC, the Defence Forces and Revenue also making the requests.

The majority of the 62 thousand data requests relate to mobile phones, according to the Irish Times.

The revelations come after the Minister for Justice announced a review of the laws on phone surveillance.
