An armed man who apparently barricaded himself inside a German cinema has been shot dead.

He took a number of people hostage as he stormed the complex in Vienheim, but authorities say no one was hurt.

The region's interior minister says a police operation there lasted around three hours.

Earlier German media reported a number of people had been injured.
