Half of GPs sign up for scheme for under sixes

Only half of doctors around the country have signed up to provide free GP care for children under the age of 6.

The HSE has released figures on the number of doctors who have signed contracts for the scheme which is due to be rolled out from July.

The lowest uptake is in South Tipperary with only 8 per cent of doctors signing up to the scheme.

There's also been a low uptake in Cork - North and South - Kidlare/West Wicklow, Limerick, Louth, Meath and Wicklow while the highest uptake is in Donegal, Roscommon and Longford/Westmeath.

Many GPs have expressed concern about their ability to take part in the scheme - saying they don't have the resources to deal with the anticipated increase in workload.
