The fifty eight thousand students receiving their Leaving Cert results this week are being reminded that help is on hand.

The annual National Parents Council post primary helpline will open on Wednesday to offer advice to students and parents about all aspects of the results.

12 guidance counsellors will man the phones for six working days after students get their results. They'll deal with everything from points queries to appeals and repeats.

The helpline's set to handle more calls than ever before as a new points system is coming into force. Students will now be awarded one of eight wide grades - which no longer decrease in five or ten point blocks.

It's designed to take pressure off students so they're not disappointed if they narrowly miss out on a higher grade.

The true effects of the new system will only become apparent when the CAO offers come out on Monday and the helpline will also deal with any queries then.

One of the big issues every year is grants and grants administrator SUSI is reminding people that it's not too late to apply

Anyone with queries however big or small can phone 1800 265 165 when the helpline opens on Wednesday.
