People in Ireland are paying almost 6 euro for a one-second call to directory enquiry services.
That's one of the findings of research carried out by the Consumers Association of Ireland.
This study by the CAI highlights what it says is the dramatic rise in calls to national directory enquiries - with prices ranging from 60 cent all the way up to 5 euro 58.
As of last week, a one minute call to 11-8-11 costs 3-euro 42 from Eircom landlines - with one second calls to 11-8-90 costing 3-40 - and calls to 11850 receiving a minimum charge of 5-58.
However - those costs can escalate if the caller is connected directly to the number sought - with one such consumer paying 19 euro 40 to be put through.
The Consumers Association says the public can cut the cost by using the free online search engines each of the service providers hosts online - or by calling the little known 11-8-88 - which costs as little as 60 cent.
