High Court rules doctors may turn off life support of clinically dead pregnant woman

The 8th amendment of the constitution is being defended by pro-life campaigners.

It follows a ruling by the High Court yesterday, that granted doctors permission to withdraw life support for a brain-dead woman, who has been kept alive because she was pregnant.

Legal advice had prevented the withdrawal of life support up until this point, because of the rights of the unborn as set out in the 8th amendment.

The 26 year old mother of two, was 15 weeks pregnant when she was pronounced clinically dead earlier this month.
