A senior HSE official has compared people socialising on the streets over the weekend to V Day celebrations.

It follows gatherings of large crowds in Dublin, Cork, and Galway over the past few days.

More restrictions are due to ease this week with the reopening of hotels, while outdoor dining is resuming next week.

The HSE's Chief Clinical Officer Colm Henry says some people have been acting as if the war against covid is over.

It comes after the Tanaiste says that local lockdowns are a possibility heading into the summer, as concerns grow around the so-called Indian variant.

The latest figures show there are 128 cases of the mutation in Ireland, however, it is believed to be more transmissible than previous strains.
