The HSE has announced additional medicines under its Preferred Drugs scheme aimed at saving patients up to €200 a year.

The Health Service Executive is recommending the use of Ramipril and Candesartan for high blood pressure and heart failure.

Its encouraging doctors and pharmacists to prescribe the drugs in future, which can also help to save the taxpayer €4 million a year.

Professor Michael Barry says the HSE wants to secure overall savings of €17 million this year through the use of preferred drugs:
