The HSE is to review new research which suggests processed and red meat can cause cancer.

Research by the World Health Organisation published yesterday, classifies processed and red meats as 'carcinogenic to humans'.

It says there is a clear link between eating too much processed meat and bowel cancer and that red meat is a likely cause of some cancers.

The Irish Farmers Association has moved to reassure consumers, saying consuming recommended quantities of red meat is recognised by health experts as beneficial to health.
