Groups representing survivors of child abuse have described the sentence handed down to Tom Humphries yesterday as unduly lenient.

The former sports writer has begun a two and a half year sentence for the defilement of a child.

Legal experts say itÂ’s important that people still feel they can give a character reference for a person charged with child abuse.
