Targeted measures to tackle waiting lists are expected to be announced as part of the HSE's service plan for next year this morning.

Plans to recruit hundreds of extra doctors and nurses, as well as the expansion of cancer services will also be announced.

The Irish Times reports that the Health Minister Leo Varadkar will advertise for 200 consultant doctor posts, subject to agreement with the Irish Medical Organisation on pay.

The Department of Health received an increase in its budget for next year, to over 13 billion euro and will have 330 million euro to spend on support services.
