A group of Independent TDs and councillors have been meeting in County Offaly today to agree an alliance for the next election.
TDs Shane Ross, Finian McGrath, Michael Fitzmaurice and John Halligan are hosting the event in the Bridge House Hotel in Tullamore.
Around 100 people, including around 65 councillors, are attending today’s meeting here in Tullamore.
They’re setting out a list of priorities and principles that would guide the alliance. Opposition to the party whip system is reported to be high on that list.
The group are stressing that this is not a new party, and a name for the alliance is expected in due course.
Today’s meeting is taking place behind closed doors, however a media briefing is expected to take place later this afternoon.
