The Banking Inquiry chairman says the committees "owes it to the Irish people" to finish its final report into the crisis.

Ciaran Lynch was speaking ahead of a meeting where members will consider over 340 amendments to the final report.

The report does not yet contain any recommendations, but the chairman says they'll be written once the Executive Summary is finalised.

And although some members are downbeat about agreeing to the final report, Ciaran Lynch says they have to do their best anyway:

Other members, however, are more upbeat that they'll be able to sign off on their final report this weekend.

Today FM understands that while there are many more agreements than expected, many are simply procedural - and seek minor changes of some passages, or the deletion of others. 

One source with knowledge of the process said there were only a small number of substantive changes which involved inserting new sections.

The difficulty facing the inquiry is that while there is general ambition for a final report to be issued, members may have different views about what issues they want the report to focus on.

This may then force the members to compromise on a relatively bland report with few, if any, major findings or recommendations.

Meanwhile it's reported this afternoon that the inquiry could be able to publish its books of evidence without a final report - contrary to what members had previously been told.

There are an estimated 500,000 pages of evidence involved - including the minutes of bank meetings which have previously never been released.

Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty says it's vital that those documents are released:
