A forensic examination is continuing at the scene where a 56-year-old man was found dead in Co Kildare.
A murder investigation is expected to be launched after the man, who had dissident republican links, was found assaulted between St John's Lane and the Greenhills housing estate in Athy, shortly before midnight on Thursday.
He was transferred to Naas General Hospital, but died at around 5 o'clock yesterday morning.
Gardai are appealing for information from anyone who was in the area at the time.
