The HSE has confirmed Ireland's first known cases of the Zika virus.

Two adults were infected with the disease but neither was "at risk of pregnancy", according to the HSE.

The two cases were not connected and both patients "are currently well and fully recovered".

Both individuals had a history of travel to a Zika affected country.

The HSE is advising those who become ill within two weeks after returning home from a Zika-affected area to contact their doctor for assessment.

Meanwhile, health officials in Texas say they've diagnosed the first case of Zika contracted through sexual activity.

The disease is usually spread by mosquitoes.

In this case, the patient was infected after having sexual contact with someone who'd been to a country affected by the virus.

Yesterday, the World Health Organisation declared the outbreak an international emergency.
