Ireland’s population is estimated to be 4.92 million – an increase of 1.3% on last year, or 64,000 people.

CSO figures revealed today that there are around 1.4 million people living in Dublin – over 28% of the total population.

The CSO also found that the number of non Irish nationals living in Ireland increased from over 593 thousand in 2018 to almost 623 thousand this year - his accounts for 12.7% of the population.

The population increase is a result of  over 30,000 more births than deaths (61,200 births and 30,400 deaths) and an increase of people coming to live here than emigrating (33,700).

The CSO warns that economic uncertainty like Brexit could lead to a population decrease due to a high number of people emigrating.
