Over 7-thousand people in Ireland will be hospitalised due to stroke this year.

The Irish Heart Foundation is launching its 12 point manifesto today to try to highlight the importance of community supports as well as improve hospital services for patients and increase awareness of stroke.

It aims to decrease the rate of death and disability among those who have suffered a stroke.

Of the 7-thousand people who are hospitalised with stroke, more than half would benefit from early supported discharge - where therapy and rehabilitation is provided in the community.

Irish Heart is also trying to get the fair deal scheme - where your assets are used to pay for care - extended to include homecare.

Around 557 million is spent on treating strokes - with 14 million spent on nursing homes and less than 7 million spent on community rehabilitation, which has been shown to be more beneficial to patients.
