An Irish man (49) has been arrested in connection with the alleged murder of a tourist in India.

Norwegian tourist Sundra Erdemir (41) was found with severe injuries in Goa on Saturday.

Mr Erdemir died at the Goa Medical College and Hospital shortly afterwards.

The Times of India reports that the accused appeared before judicial magistrate first class Mapusa, where he was remanded in police custody for six days.

It is understood the Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the case and has been in contact with the embassy in New Delhi.

A police official said investigations are underway.
