Irish Man Stabbed To Death In France

An Irish man has been stabbed to death in France.

66-year-old John Dowling was working as an English language teacher at the Léonard de Vinci University in Paris.

He was attacked in front of the school earlier today.

A man has been arrested, with the school saying the suspect was a former student.

The university said John was a "very friendly man, respected and loved by all students and colleagues".

The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the case and is now providing consular assistance.

The school is in the La Défense business district of the French capital.

It has more than 4,600 students within its four schools - catering to engineering, management and multimedia.

France's Minister of Higher Education, Frédérique Vidal, said the killing was an "indignation".

She said all light should be shed on the police investigation.

She also offered her sympathies to the victim and the workers at the university.
