The Defence Forces says Irish troops in Syria are on high alert, after the capture of United Nations peacekeepers.

43 members of the UN mission, which Ireland is involved in, were detained in the Golan Heights region by an armed group.

Its understood they were detained during fighting between Syrian rebels and government forces.

The Defence Forces says all troops in the 44th Infantry Group are safe and accounted for, as is their equipment.
