Irish Water denies workers guaranteed pay hikes

Irish Water's parent company Ervia claims absolutely no pay increases are guaranteed to any of its workers.

It was responding to media reports earlier today which claimed that Irish Water workers could get an annual salary increase - if they could prove that similar firms had received a pay rise.

Ervia also says that there is a salary freeze in place until 2016.

Meanwhile the head of one of the country's largest Trade Unions has agreed with the Taoiseach's warning over water charges.

Last night Enda Kenny said the abolition of the charges would lead to a 4 per cent hike in income tax.

Today SIPTU's Jack O'Connor has echoed that sentiment - he claims the Government will need to make up a shortfall in funding if householders refuse to pay Irish water.

Mr O'Connor also says that the coalition will be forced to hike taxes and seek private investment to plug the gap:
