A video apparently showing the murder of British hostage Alan Henning, who was kidnapped by Islamic State militants, has been released on the internet.

There has been no official confirmation of his death at this stage.

The 47-year-old taxi driver from Salford was part of an aid convoy when he was kidnapped in December crossing the border between Turkey and Syria.

Sky's Political Correspondent Sophy Ridge is at the UK Foreign Office and has been talking to officials:

Responding to the release of the video appearing to show the murder of Alan Henning, an FCO spokesperson said:

"We are aware of the video and are working urgently to verify the contents. If true, this is a further disgusting murder. We are offering the family every support possible; they ask to be left alone at this time."

The British Prime Minister said: "The brutal murder of Alan Henning by ISIL shows just how barbaric and repulsive these terrorists are. "My thoughts and prayers tonight are with Alan's wife Barbara, their children and all those who loved him. "Alan had gone to Syria to help get aid to people of all faiths in their hour of need. The fact that he was taken hostage when trying to help others and now murdered demonstrates that there are no limits to the depravity of these ISIL terrorists. "We will do all we can to hunt down these murderers and bring them to justice."
