It's hoped the introduction of a new domestic violence register, under Jennie's Law, will help save lives.

The proposed legislation is named after 24-year-old Jennifer Poole from Dublin, who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in April 2021.

Gavin Murphy, had served time in prison for attacking a former girlfriend, and had lied to Jennifer during their relationship. The 33-year-old told her he was living in Spain during the time he was in jail.

The couple were broken up at the time of her murder.

The mother-of-two was killed in her home in Finglas after she had given Gavin Murphy permission to use her apartment to take a shower while she wasn't there.

In 2022, he was sentenced to life in prison for her murder.

Government ministers are due to consider plans to set up a domestic violence register, where convicted offenders would be named with the permission of their victim.

Justice Minister, Jim O'Callaghan, will bring the draft legislation to cabinet on Tuesday.

Jennifer's brother, Jason, believes a domestic violence register would provide life-saving information.

" If this law had it been in place, Jennifer would still be alive today, in my opinion and in my family's opinion, because Gavin had a history of domestic violence in particular.

"He had done time in prison for domestic violence offences, and when he met Jennifer, he told her that he was living in Spain, and Jennifer was none of the wiser.

However, Jason said it's bittersweet to see 'Jennie's Law' becoming a reality.

"With the legislation going through tomorrow to Cabinet, it's that reminder of what happened to Jennifer four years ago.

"To walk into a newsagents today and to see her in the front page of all the newspapers again brings you back to Saturday and Sunday 17 and 18 April 2021.

"But this time it's of a more positive nature, and that's what we have to think of as a family.

"That Jennifer's loss will protect other families in the future so that they don't have to go through what we're going through".
