Joan Burton elected as new Labour leader

Joan Burton has become the new leader of the Labour Party.

She's outpolled her rival Alex White by a margin of over three-to-one, to become only the first female leader in Labour's history.

She's already been appointed Tánaiste - only the third female holder of that office in the history of the state.

She'll speak again to Enda Kenny in the coming days to begin discussing the cabinet reshuffle, and who might now fill Labour's ministries.

One of those ministers will be Alan Kelly, the Tipperary TD who's set to be elected as Deputy Leader.

A significant question now arising is whether Alex White will be at the cabinet table: he disappointing showing could suggest that there may be no appetite to have him at the top table of government.
