Joan Burton has officially launched her bid to become the leader of the Labour Party.

The social protection minister is the first person to confirm plans to succeed Eamon Gilmore.

This evening Brendan Howlin confirmed he will not be running for the Labour leadership.

Joan Burton will be supported by at least two TDs and two Senators - and may be unopposed for the position.

Meanhwile, the Taoiseach says the removal of Eamon Gilmore will not see him rush into a cabinet reshuffle.
