The new leader of the Labour Party will be confirmed later today.

Joan Burton is expected to win the position, ahead of the junior health minister Alex White.

Confirmation of the new leader and deputy leader will begin the formal process of a cabinet reshuffle.

our political correspondent Gavan Reilly reports.

Six weeks after Eamon Gilmore annoucned he'd be stepping down, today marks the close of polling to elect a new Labour leader.

Some 3,000 Labour members are entitled to vote - and a majority had done so before the end of this week.

The current Deputy Leader Joan Burton is the bookies favourite to take the job - though the junior health minister Alex White may pull off an upset.

There are also four candidates for the Deputy Leadership - Sean Sherlock, Ciara Conway, Alan Kelly and Michael McCarthy.

Deputy Conway's ruled herself out of the running to take a cabinet job if she's elected, but each of the other three candidates will expect to be made a full cabinet minister if they win today.

That'll give the clearest indication yet of who might be sitting at the top table when the cabinet reshuffle is announced next week.
