Justice Minister Open To Changing Bail Laws

The Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan says he's open to changing Ireland's bail laws if they're needed.

It comes after an Assistant Garda Commissioner was appointed to carry out a review of bail conditions following yesterday’s jailing of a 25 year old man for rape.

Assistant Garda Commissioner Pat Leahy will examine the case of Eoin Berkeley, previously of Hamptonwood Way in Finglas, who was sentenced to 14 years in prison for the repeated rape of a Spanish student in Dublin in 2017.

He was on bail at the time of the offence.

Minister Charlie Flanagan says practice and procedure around conditions of bail may be what needs to be addressed by government and the Gardaí.

However the Justice Minister says he isn't convinced a change to legislation is needed, but will listen to the outcome of the Garda review.
