It's been confirmed that Minister Shatter's replacement will not now be named this evening.
An announcement on the new appointment will now be made in the Dáíl at 10:45am tomorrow morning.
Current ministers Leo Varadkar and Simon Coveney are among the favourites to take the job.
The Taoiseach informed the Dáil of the decision earlier today saying he'd accepted the resignation with regret.
He said the resignation came on foot of the Guerin report into the handling of allegations of Garda misconduct.
The Taoiseach said the 300-page report had recommended a full commission of inquiry - and was critical of the reaction of many state agencies, including the Minister.
The Guerin report will be published on Friday morning - but Alan Shatter will no longer be in charge to oversee the government's response.
