Enda Kenny says he has "no intention" of being diverted from the work he is mandated to do.

The Taoiseach was speaking after one of his backbenchers called on him to step down over the summer so a new leader can take over.

Kerry TD Brendan Griffin says it's not feasible for Kenny to remain in place indefinitely when he has already indicated he does not want to lead Fine Gael into the next election - and when the timing of that election can't be predicted.

But speaking in Castlebar this afternoon the Taoiseach indicated he would not be honoring calls to step aside.

Two of his ministers have backed the Taoiseach this lunchtime, saying he should be allowed to choose his own departure date.

Richard Bruton and Simon Harris both said the Taoiseach had only been reappointed two months ago and it was far too early to ask him to stand aside.

Both also said it would not make sense for a motion of no confidence in Kenny - or, indeed, for a motion of confidence supporting him in his role - at this week's meeting of the FG parliamentary party.

They said it would force the party to divide on the cusp of the summer break, which would not be welcome.
