The Taoiseach has called for a national debate on pornography - saying some young minds are being "corrupted and tainted" by exposure to so much of it.

He made the comments at the launch of a new helpline for the victims of crime this afternoon.

In a discussion on sexual assault he expressed worry about pornography and so-called 'lads mags' - and the role he believes they have in influencing younger people.

He said, in some cases, young minds "are being tainted and corrupted by an avalanche of this kind of material".

He said it was time for a national conversation around the issue, and said it would form part of the government's agenda for a more caring country.
