The US Secretary of State John Kerry says prolonging the political crisis in Washington, could weaken the US globally.

He says if it goes on, it could cause people to question the willingness or ability of the US to stay the course, but that's not the case.

The government shutdown has dragged into a fifth day, with no sign of agreement between Republicans and Democrats on the budget.

800 thousand workers remain at home without pay.

Former Republican Press Secretary Idil Oyman expects a deal to be done shortly.
