Landlords who breach rent pressure zone caps will face criminal prosecution under new legislation.

The Housing Minister has announced a new bill aimed at giving tenants more protection.

The Rental Tenancies Act will give the Residential Tenancies Board more power to pursue complaints on tenants' behalf.

It also aims to give more security of tenure for renters by giving longer notice periods that landlords have to serve.

And the bill will include a rent register aimed at making the market more transparent, by compiling and publishing the average price of rents in each area.

Minister Eoghan Murphy says landlords who breach the rent pressure zone caps 'could face fines upwards of €15,000'. He also says that Rogue landlords who 'abuse people's human rights' face the threat of jail.
