The Irish Navy has rescued more than 600 migrants in the Mediterranean off the coast of Libya.

The LÉ James Joyce picked up the migrants in three separate operations earlier today close to Tripoli.

In the first instance 15 people were rescued from a wooden vessel while a further 150 were located in two rubber vessels.

Another 452 migrants were later rescued from eight separate vessels.

They are now receiving food, water and medical treatment.
