The Rio Olympic Games has been officially declared open during a ceremony at the iconic Maracana stadium.
The flame was lit by Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima, a Brazilian 2004 marathon bronze medallist.

The festivities come at a time of political instability in the country. President Dilma Roussef is going through impeachment proceedings, and interim Brazilian president Michel Temer was booed as he declared the Games officially open.
A refugee team received a standing ovation during the parade of nations.

These people were watching the opening in a bar not far from the Olympic Park:

Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bunchen came out of retirement to strut her stuff at the ceremony.

There was no shortage of rhythm or colour as samba dancers got the Maracana moving.
