A landmark European ruling has found that local authority housing in Ireland is substandard.

The European Committee of Social Rights has found that the state violates the rights of tenants, who complained of dampness, mould and contaminated water.

It comes as a newspaper expose has revealed that desperate tenants in Dublin are living in slum conditions with up to 30 people crammed into one property.

A special investigation by the Irish Independent found that landlords are fooling council staff by hiding bunk beds before inspections.

As the demand for social housing grows, one local authority has come up with an affordable solution.

Kildare County Council has approved plans to build a new housing estate where all homes are less than 35-square meters.

Houses in the 'tiny homes project' would cost as little as 40-thousand Euro.
