Counting in the European and local elections is resuming around the country.

There's just over 77 of the country's 949 council seats left to be filled.

Results over the weekend showed a surge in support for the Green Party.

Fine Gael had mixed fortunes, but failed to make the gains party leader Leo Varadkar had hoped for.

Reacting to the results, the Taoiseach says he is not ruling out a general election.

But he clarified last night he will not be going to the polls in the next few weeks.

Speaking at the RDS count centre in Dublin, he said the timing of the election is not necessarily his call.

"In the context of a current Dáil in a minority Government, where we only have a quarter of the seats in the Dáil, that's just the reality of this.

"Of course anybody in government would prefer to be in a government with a stable majority - we don't have that".

Provisional overall results from the European Parliament indicate Europe's traditional centre has been fragmented as more voters turn to green, liberal and far-right parties.

Turnout was at a two-decade high for ballots across all 28 European Union countries.

Meanwhile counting of the plebiscite on directly elected mayors is set to begin later this morning.

People in Cork, Limerick and Waterford voted on the issue.

Early indications suggest the proposal could be defeated in all three cities.

Tánaiste Simon Coveney said the Government may be prepared to ask the question again if the idea is rejected.
