The White House is insisting President Donald Trump got rid of his national security advisor Michael Flynn not for any legal reason, but because he lost trust in him.

Mr Flynn has asked to resign over claims he discussed US sanctions against Russia with Moscow's ambassador.

He has admitted not giving a full account of their phone conversations to the Vice President Mike Pence.

The Democrats have called for an investigation into how much the president knew about the contacts.
