The price of flying to the US looks set to fall dramatically.
Low-cost carrier Norwegian Air has been granted a transatlantic license by authorities in the US.
The low-cost airline last year announced its plans to launch direct flights from Cork to Boston, with four to five flights a week.
However, the plan was held up by legal challenges in the US, from competing airlines and trade unions.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny has welcomed the news, saying it may do for long haul flights what Ryanair did for short haul travel.
