Shoppers around St Stephen's Green had a lucky escape at lunchtime this afternoon.

Dublin Fire Brigade was called to remove a large pane of glass from a third-floor window, after it cracked and began to shatter onto the street just before lunch hour today.

Officers from the fire brigade sealed off the area and used a cherry-picker to reach the window, which was then manually removed.

The incident occurred at a building housing the clothing stores H&M and Zara, at the corner of Clarendon Row and South King Street - and directly opposite the side entrance to St Stephen's Green shopping centre.

Gardai say Dublin City Council are helping to clean it up, and that nobody was injured in the incident.

However it's understood that today's incident is the second time such an issue has occurred in five days.

A similar incident occurred at the same building last Friday evening, which again led to the street being sealed off for Fire Brigade officers to remove the rest of the broken pane.
