Major disruption due to bus strike

There's disruption for up to 1 million commuters this morning, with Bus Eireann and Dublin Bus workers on strike.

The action is going ahead, after 11th hour talks at the LRC broke down yesterday.

The Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe had appealed to the unions to call off their action, saying it could cost each company ten million euro.

In response both companies are going to the High Court today in an effort to recoup the lost revenue.

Officials attached to SIPTU and the NBRU say they heard nothing new from Bus Eireann or Dublin Bus during yesterday afternoon's talks.

As a result, they're going ahead with this 48 hour industrial action that could affect up to a million passengers.

The action is expected to cost Bus Éireann and Dublin Bus a combined 20 million euro and the companies say they believe it isn't a legal strike.

They will go before the High Court this morning to look to recoup the lost revenue.

Further strike days are planned by both unions on 15th and 16th May, while the NBRU is proposing another three days of action on 29, 30 and 31 May.

Striking workers will this morning gather at 11 o'clock at Parnell Square in Dublin and march to the Dail.

The row centres on plans to sell off one in ten bus routes to private operators.

Gardai say bus lanes will NOT be open to motorists, as they will facilitate taxis, cyclists, private bus companies and the Emergency Services.
