A man in his 60s has been charged with the murder of 83 year old John Brogan at his home in Pheasant Hill, Cloonkeen, Castlebar, County Mayo, on Sunday.
Kevin Mc Hale of Annagh, Castlebar, appeared before Castlebar District Court earlier.
The court heard evidence of arrest, charge and caution, and the accused made no reply to the charge after being cautioned.
There was no application for bail and Judge Fiona Lydon remanded Mr McHale in custody.
She also said he should receive whatever medical and psychiatric intervention deemed necessary.
